Akathist Friday. The order of reading akathists

Saturday of the fifth week of Great Lent is ahead. This is a special Saturday. On Friday, the day before, at the festive morning of the Sabbath church day, the Great Akathist is read Mother of God. Such a day occurs only once in the Church year. This is the feast of the Praise of the Mother of God or, as this day is also called, the Saturday of the Akathist.

Akathist, - from Greek it is translated as a non-sedal song, that is, "a song that is sung without sitting down, while standing." In ancient times, the art of church poetry was very developed, and the kontakion of the current akathist was an independent and great poetic work. So the well-known kontakion (The very word "kontakion" in Greek κ?ντ?κιον came from κοντ?ς - a stick on which a scroll of parchment with a text was wound. Kontakion in its present form and volume is a small chant in one or two stanzas.) " Chosen Voivode…”, at first it was also a song praising the Mother of God, it sounded differently, and consisted of many stanzas and expressed gratitude for the repeated salvation from the enemies of the barbarians who had attempted on Constantinople since 626. Then the Avars and Slavs stood at the walls of Constantinople, and only the intercession of the Mother of God saved the city.

The well-known words of the kontakion “Victorious to the Chosen Voivode, as if getting rid of the evil ones ...” appeared at the same time, in 626, and their author was supposedly the holy novel the Melodist. Kontakion turned into a victorious thanksgiving song addressed to the Mother of God on behalf of “Her city”, that is, Constantinople, delivered from the “evil”. In the modern (at least from the 15th century) Church Slavonic translation, the words “Thy city” are replaced by “Thy servants”. The text of "The Chosen Voivode ..." became the beginning, as it were, the preface to a song-poem that already existed by that time, glorifying Holy Mother of God. This beginning became the first kontakion in the text of the modern Great Akathist, read at the feast of the Praise of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Temple in Blachernae on the site of the temple where the akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos was read for the first time

Our veneration of this holiday is symbolic. For the first time in the history of the Church, as a church hymn, the Great Akathist was read in the Blachernae Church, at night, by Patriarch Photius of Constantinople, after the miraculous deliverance of the city from the enemy fleet of the Russians, our ancestors, who besieged the city in 860. Emperor Michael III hastily returned from the border army to the capital and, together with Photius, plunged the Robe of the Virgin into the sea. Suddenly, a strong storm arose and scattered the ships of the Rus, after which they fled. This is how this miracle is described in The Tale of Bygone Years: “... and they carried out the divine robe of the Holy Mother of God with songs, and moistened its floor in the sea. There was silence at that time and the sea was calm, but then suddenly a storm arose with the wind, and huge waves arose again, scattered the ships of the godless Russians, and washed them ashore, and broke them, so that few of them managed to avoid this disaster and return home ."

Then, in 860, warlike dews, our ancestors, attacked Constantinople.

“Then the raid of the Ross (this is a Scythian tribe, unbridled and cruel), which devastated the Roman lands, Pontus Euxinus itself was set on fire and cordoned off the city (Michael fought with the Ismailites at that time). However, having had their fill of God's wrath, they returned home - Photius, who then ruled the church, prayed to God about this - and soon an embassy arrived from them in the royal city, asking them to partake of God's baptism. What happened” (Theoph. Cont. 196.6-15; cited in: Theophan’s Follower, p. 84).

Since then, the Christian faith began to spread among the Russians. In 988, that is, 128 years after this event, Russia was baptized. We, the descendants of the Russians, whom Patriarch Photius asked the Mother of God to save from the invasion: “Victory to the chosen voivode!” a holiday was established called Praise to the Most Holy Theotokos in honor of the miraculous deliverance from enemies through Her intercession. The feast day was set for the fifth Saturday of Great Lent. Gradually, the order of reading the Great Akathist on the day of the holiday developed. This Great Akathist is the only one of its kind, since all the other Akathists were written in imitation of him, the first. At a special service, which happens only once a year on the feast of the Praise of the Most Holy Theotokos, we will pray and ask the Mother of God to free us from all evil. After all, now she is our intercessor.

The National Assembly asked the patrologist to comment on this event Priest Michael Asmus:

- Why was this particular day, Saturday of the fifth week of Great Lent, designated for the celebration of the holiday?
- The miracle itself happened on this day - Saturday of the fifth week of Great Lent. But since the Church also lives according to the Paschal calendar, the feast on the day associated with Pascha will be movable.

- Is it possible to find this akathist in ordinary prayer books and akathist books and read it at home?
- This akathist is in every prayer book. It is called the Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos. He is the most famous and popular akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos. As a matter of fact, this is the first akathist and all the others arose in imitation of it.

- If you can read it at home, then why does the Church attach such importance to this holiday?
- Everyone loves akathists to the Mother of God. Especially the Russians, who have a lot of imitations. The theme of the miraculous intervention of the Mother of God in the military affairs of the state was fixed in the church mind on this day. And what in history and in worship was attributed to Constantinople, every Orthodox city tries to attribute to itself. Of course, you can read this akathist at home, but public worship expresses the catholicity of the Church. And such a public reading of the Great Akathist reminds us of Orthodox statehood, because such miracles were possible only thanks to Orthodoxy as the state religion.

The great akathist consists of Kondaks interspersed with Ikos. Ikos, unlike kontakion, contains the text of joyful glorification (“Rejoice, with it joy will shine: Rejoice, with it the oath will disappear ...”, etc.) and a special, repeated at the end of each ikos, the same ending-refrain (“Rejoice, Bride not bride "). Kontakion and ikos make up, as it were, one block of the akathist. There are 12 such blocks in total. All akathists now have this structure.

The reading of the Great Akathist on Friday evening is included in the service of the All-Night Vigil before Saturday. The entire akathist is not read at once, but in parts four times: after the Six Psalms (six psalms read at the beginning of Matins, when all the candles are extinguished), during Polyeleos (part of the festive Matins, beginning with the words “Praise the Name of the Lord ...” and before singing the canons) , after the 3rd and 6th songs of the canon.

By the holiday, on the day of the celebration in honor of the saint, it is customary to decorate the icons of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa with elegant ribbons, flowers or a riza.

On the Day of Remembrance of the Great Martyr in the old days, believers consecrated fruits in temples, which they then kept in the house until the next year, and offered up prayers on Paraskeva Friday for the health of relatives and friends.

Prayer from Paraskeva Pyatnitskaya is my saint.

There is an old prayer, the holy words of which will help to protect oneself from quarrels and family scandals. As soon as you feel that a “storm” is coming, immediately retire and read the prayer, crossing yourself three times after. And every day she starts well and ends well. Her strength is enormous.

Merciful merciful God, our beloved Father! You, by your gracious will, by Your Divine providence, have placed us in a state of holy marriage, so that we, according to Your established, live in it. We rejoice in Your blessing, which is spoken in Your word, which says: He who has found a wife has found good, and receive blessing from the Lord. Lord God! Make sure that we live with each other all our lives in Your divine fear, because blessed is the Man who fears the Lord, strong to His commandments. His seed will be strong on earth, the generation of the righteous will be blessed. Make sure that they love Your word most of all, willingly listen and study it, so that we can be like a tree planted at the source of water, which bears its fruit in due time and whose leaf does not wither; to be like a husband who succeeds in everything he does. Do also that we live in peace and harmony, that in our marital state we love chastity and honesty, and do not act against them, that peace dwells in our house and we keep an honest name.

MARTYR PARASKEVA FRIDAY

The holy martyr is a healer of people from the most severe mental and bodily ailments. Prayer to her gives peace in the house and harmony between all household members. The most terrible resentment and anger will pass after this prayer.

You, scorched by the candles, with your single prayer to the almighty Lord, extinguished the natural fire, and with the same flame miraculously kindled through the angel of God, having burned the violent lawless, you led many people to the knowledge of the true God. You, to the glory of the Lord, accepting the beheading of your sword head from the tormentors, valiantly died of your suffering feat, having ascended with your soul to heaven, to the chamber of your longed-for Bridegroom Christ the King of Glory, joyfully meeting you with this heavenly voice: Rejoice, righteous ones, as the martyr Paraskeva was crowned !

Holy patroness of the temple Great Martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa

The Great Martyr Paraskeva lived at the turn of the 3rd-4th centuries in Iconium - ancient city Asia Minor (now the city of Kony in Turkey). Her parents especially revered the day of the Lord's suffering on the Cross - Friday. On Fridays, they fasted especially strictly, prayed a lot and did alms. In honor of this day, they named their daughter Pyatnitsa, which in Greek sounds like "Paraskeva", and in Russian - "Praskovya". Orphaned early, Paraskeva took a vow of virginity and saw all her thoughts and aspirations only in sowing the faith of Christ among the pagans. On behalf of the emperor, Paraskeva was captured and tortured for refusing to sacrifice to idols. She was mercilessly beaten to the point of blood and thrown into prison, barely alive (c. 303). But the Lord did not leave her and miraculously healed the sufferer.

The emperor did not understand this miracle and continued to torture Saint Paraskeva, ordering her to be hung on a tree and her body to be burned with burning torches. Burning with fire, the holy Great Martyr began to pray. And a miracle happened: the fire directed at Paraskeva rushed to her tormentors and burned many of them, leaving the saint unharmed!

When Paraskeva's head was cut off with a sword, the Christians reverently buried the Saint. From the relics of the Great Martyr, healings were given to the sick. Subsequently, the relics of the great martyr were distributed to many monasteries and temples, primarily those on Mount Athos.

Parts of her holy relics are also kept in Russia: in the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra; in the Moscow Church of the Resurrection of the Lord in Sokolniki in a casket delivered from Athos in the 19th century, and in other places.

Saint Paraskeva is revered as a healer of mental and bodily ailments, the guardian of family well-being and happiness, and the patroness of fields and livestock. The memory of Saint Paraskeva is celebrated on October 28 (November 10, according to the new style).

Observed by the power of Christ, all-glorious martyr Paraskevo, you neglected bodily illnesses, you want to strive for a good feat. Armed with a masculine sense, you rejected the feminine weakness, but having strengthened yourself with hope, you joyfully appeared at the judgment, where you clearly preached faith in the Divine Trinity, crying out to God: Alleluia.

Ikos 3

Hearing from you, wise daughter, unrighteous judge, an unheard-of word about your birth, as if your parents were pious, honoring the passions of Christ, the famous day of the namesake of you, Paraskeva, as an omen, as if you were to be a partaker of Christ's passions. The wicked hegemon did not understand this, but you spoke a foolish word and commanded that you be beaten with harsh veins and half-dead being thrown into prison. But you, having valiantly endured the most severe torments, in prison, as if in hell, rejoicing brightly, you cried out: “I will never leave Thee, Lord, but send Thy help and save me great for the sake of Thy mercy.” The same, pleasing to you, we cry out to you like this:

Rejoice, gentle dove, freed from the temptations of the crafty enemy; Rejoice, verbal lamb, running from the evil wolf of the tormentor to the good shepherd Christ God.

Rejoice, entering into the yard of the verbal sheep, standing at His right hand; Rejoice, for the marriage of the Lamb joyfully flowing.

Rejoice, for you have been prepared to eat the blessings of the eternal treasure; Rejoice, for you have been promised the blessedness of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Rejoice, wise Evangelical virgin, having a light-burning lamp; Rejoice, thou who acquired great boldness to Christ God.

Rejoice, having lifted up the good yoke of Christ by your will; Rejoice, having kept your heart clean from all flattery of the soul.

Rejoice, true partaker of Christ's passions; Rejoice, having received grace-filled help from Christ the Lord in your sufferings.

Rejoice, Paraskevo, the all-praised bride of Christ.

Kondak 4

Raise a storm of grave temptations against you, long-suffering Paraskevo; But you, from your blood, diligently drank the cup of suffering, wishing for Christ, your Zhenisa, in the wake of the sweat, laudatory martyr, and like a good-voiced gusset, you sang a song to Christ God: Alleluia.

Ikos 4

Always having the Lord before your eyes, for confessing the faith with clubs mercilessly from the tormentors of the Biem, you rejoiced, the ever-memorable martyr Paraskevo, crying out: “Nothing will separate me from Your love, Christ,” and thus striving for the Glory of God, you pleased the Lord. The same, remembering your honest suffering, we call you with tenderness:

Rejoice, all-loving lamb, offered to the shepherd Christ, like a fragrant sacrifice; Rejoice, thou who didst present undefiled torment to the immortal Bridegroom Christ, like a most honorable vein.

Rejoice, pure maiden, the true confession of the Orthodox faith before the infidels; Rejoice, righteous accuser, revealing the unrighteousness of the wicked judge.

Rejoice, as the crafty enemy has been put to shame by you, seeing yourself defeated by a young virgin; Rejoice, for the powers of heaven also rejoice in you, seeing you as weak and young, conquering fierce tormentors.

Rejoice, dove pure and undefiled in heart; Rejoice, humble lamb, successfully becoming more honest and blessed with the passion of the Lord.

Rejoice, as if you were brought to your Creator, as a fragrant censer; Rejoice, as the bright Sun of truth looks at you, shining three days from the tomb and strengthening you for a suffering feat.

Rejoice, for for your glorious suffering you were honored to enter into the chamber of Christ, the King of Heaven; rejoice, as there, together with the saints, you enjoy indescribable joy.

Rejoice, Paraskevo, the all-praised bride of Christ.

Akathist they call a laudatory hymn in honor of the Savior, the Mother of God, saints or any holidays (events).

Any akathist consists of 25 songs (according to the Greek alphabet). Thirteen of them are called kontakami (praise), and twelve - ikos (long song), which provide an explanation of the essence of the festive event. It is because of this that the ikos is never read on its own, but only after reading the kontakion. All ikos, with rare exceptions, end with the word “rejoice”, and at the end of kontakia one can always hear “hallelujah”, which means “praise God”. After reading the kontakion, there is always an ikos, which is usually divided into two parts. The last kontakion is considered an appeal to the one to whom the akathist is dedicated. By tradition, it is repeated three times in a row. The akathist is always followed by the reading of a prayer.

Akathists are not a statutory, obligatory liturgical rite. At divine services in churches, only the Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos "The Chosen Governor ..." is necessarily read on Saturday of the Praise of the Most Holy Theotokos, on the fifth week of Great Lent. In modern practice, during Great Lent, the Akathist to the Passion of the Lord is also used in the order of the Passion, which is served on Sunday evening in 2-5 weeks of Great Lent.

Akathists in honor of the holidays are sometimes read at Matins of the festive divine service or at the Moleben on the very day of the holiday. In general, at prayer services they often resort to reading akathists. This is how the order of reading the Paraklisis of the Mother of God developed, where at the prayer service after the sixth ode of the canon, an akathist to the Mother of God (or to her icons) is read.

Calling for help in everyday needs of the saints of God, they read akathists to them, the icons of the Mother of God.

There are no special instructions in the Charter for reading akathists in the temple and during private (home) prayer. But from general church practice, one can deduce the rule: during Great Lent it is not customary to read akathists , except for the Akathist to the Mother of God on the 5th week (on Saturday) and the Akathist to the Passion of Christ. On all other days of the year, the reading of akathists is allowed.

The akathist itself has a special sequence. So the 13th kontakion is read three times, and immediately after it the first ikos is repeated again, after which the first kontakion is read. At the end of the akathist, a prayer is read.

What akathists to read in everyday needs

The order of reading akathists.

Reading akathists separately from the morning and evening prayer rule.

Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us (three times, with the sign of the cross and bows from the waist).

Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse our sins. Lord, forgive our iniquities. Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Your name's sake.

Lord have mercy (thrice).

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in heaven. Yes, shine your name. May your kingdom come. May Thy will be done, as in Heaven and on earth. Give us our daily bread today. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Lord have mercy (12 times).

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Come, let us worship our King God (bow).

Come, let us bow down and bow down to Christ our King God (bow).

Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, the King and our God (bow).

Psalm 50

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy, and according to the multitude of Thy mercies, cleanse my iniquity. Wash me most of all from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. As I know my iniquity, and my sin before me is taken out. I have sinned against You alone, and I have done evil before You, as if You were justified in Your words and won, when You judge. Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and in sins give birth to me, my mother. Behold, thou hast loved the truth, Thy obscure and secret wisdom revealed to me. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Give joy and gladness to my ears, the bones of the humble will rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins, and cleanse all my iniquities. Create a pure heart in me, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Give me the joy of Your salvation, and confirm me with the Sovereign Spirit. I will teach the wicked in Your way, and the wicked will turn to You. Deliver me from the blood, O God, God of my salvation, my tongue will rejoice in Your righteousness. Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will proclaim your praise. As if you would have desired sacrifices, you would have given them, you would not favor burnt offerings. Sacrifice to God, the spirit is broken, the heart is contrite and humble, God will not despise. Please, O Lord, with Thy favor Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, an offering and a burnt offering, then they will offer calves on Your altar.

Symbol of faith

I believe in the One God the Father, the Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible. And in the One Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only Begotten, Who was born from the Father before all ages; Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, Whom all was. For us for the sake of man and for our sake of salvation, he descended from heaven and became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and Mary the Virgin and became human. Crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried. And resurrected on the third day according to the Scriptures. And ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father. And the packs of the future with glory to judge the living and the dead, His Kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Life-Giving One, who proceeds from the Father, Who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke the prophets. Into one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. I look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come. Amen.

Then the akathist (read after the 6th ode of the canon).

At the end of the reading of the canon - a prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ or the Mother of God, the saint - according to the meaning of the akathist. Then:

It is worthy to eat, as truly bless Theotokos, Blessed and Immaculate and Mother of Our God. The most honest Cherubim and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, without the corruption of God the Word, who gave birth to the real Mother of God, we magnify Thee.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Lord have mercy (thrice).

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers, the saint (the name of the saint to whom the akathist was read, if to the Lord or the Mother of God, then we do not say anything) and all the saints, have mercy and save me, Greek Good and Humanitarian. Amen.

If the Cross - by the power of the Honest and Life-Giving Cross

If the Angels - Honest Heavenly Forces of the Incorporeal
