Icon of the Mother of God "Consolation in Sorrows and Sorrows"

History

The circumstances of the original origin of the image of the Mother of God "Consolation in Sorrows and Sorrows" are unknown, but the writing of the icon indicates that it is very ancient.

There is a legend that the icon belonged to the Patriarch of Constantinople, the saint, with whom she visited all the wanderings and travels of the lord and in 1653 first arrived in Russia.

After the death of the saint in 1654, the icon was delivered to, where it remained until October 1849, when the Russian was discovered. Then Metropolitan Gregory, who lived in retirement in Vatopeda, gave the icon to the newly opened skete as a blessing from the monastery. The image became the cell shrine of the founder of the Russian Andreevsky Skete on Athos, Hieroschemamonk Bessarion (Vavilov). When the opening of this skete followed on October 11, 1849, Vissarion blessed the brethren with the words: “May this icon be your joy and comfort in sorrows and sorrows.”

The glorification of this image took place in Russia, in the Vyatka province, in 1863, when Hieromonk Paisios arrived in the city of Slobodskaya of this province from Athos, bringing with him the icon of the Mother of God "Consolation in Sorrows and Sorrows." This image was decorated with a rich silver and gilt riza with a diamond crown on the head of the Mother of God. He was placed in the women's, in the Church of the Nativity. When about. Paisius was about to return to the Holy Mountain, from the icon Holy Mother of God there was a miraculous healing of an 18-year-old mute youth, after which a real pilgrimage began to the image. Many suffering pilgrims received healing and comfort in their sorrows from the holy image in those days.

Then the holy icon was transferred with great honors to the women's city of Vyatka, and in Slobodskoye there remained an exact list from the miraculous image, made by the same healed 18-year-old youth. The spiritual upsurge of the Vyatchans was so great that the Vyatka Gubernskiye Vedomosti on the eve of the Velikoretsk Cross Procession compared it in terms of religious mood with the meeting of the Athos shrine.

O. Paisius, going to Athos, left in Transfiguration convent a list of the miraculous icon, and on June 26, 1871, in the name of the icon "Consolation in Sorrows and Sorrows" in Vyatka, a temple was laid, which was built for more than 11 years. On August 31, 1882, on the day of the Provision of the Holy Belt of the Most Holy Theotokos, Archbishop Appolos consecrated the temple, in which every Saturday an akathist was read before the icon. Once every two years, in memory of the stay of the holy icon in the Vyatka region and the miraculous healings that came from it, solemn religious processions were performed throughout the diocese.

On November 19, 1866, in the Slobodsky Nativity of Christ Monastery, a gilded riza sent from Athos was solemnly placed on the list of the miraculous image of the Mother of God “Consolation in Sorrows and Sorrows”, and in commemoration of the first healing from the icon (the mute youth who completed the list), the monastery performed especially solemn service. On this day, a celebration was established in honor of the miraculous image of the Most Holy Theotokos.

On March 27, 1890, the shrine was delivered to Russia and placed in St. Petersburg in the Annunciation Cathedral at. An exact copy of it was left in the monastery itself. Citizens of the city, day and night, hurried in crowds to bow to the miraculous image. The grace of God then deigned to glorify the icon of the Mother of God with numerous miracles.

Now the image is stored in the altar of St. Petersburg. The icon is taken out for veneration once a year before the evening service on the eve of December 2 and returned to the altar on December 2. The venerated list from the holy icon remains in the town of Slobodskoy. In 1999, the throne of one of the temples of the former male Holy Cross Monastery in Slobodskoy was consecrated in honor of the miraculous icon.

In the city of Voronezh, a list is also kept from the Athos shrine, on which it is written: “This icon was written and consecrated on the holy Mount Athos in the Russian Monastery of St. John Chrysostom under the rector Hieroschemamonk Kirill in 1905.” In 1999, the icon began to stream myrrh.

The icon "Consolation in Sorrows and Sorrows" is arranged in the form of a folding folding. In addition to the Most Pure Mother of God, it depicts the holy great martyrs and on horseback, the holy and holy apostle and evangelist, reverends, saints and. The image is decorated with several riza, one of which is gold.

In the middle of the 19th century, the Slobodskoy Monastery of the Nativity of Christ, during the rectorship of Abbess Pulcheria, was chosen by the Mother of God to glorify Her icon, which received the name "Consolation in Sorrows and Sorrows."

The circumstances of the original origin of the image of the Mother of God "Consolation in Sorrows and Sorrows" are unknown, but the writing of the icon indicates that it is very ancient. There is a legend that the icon belonged to the Patriarch of Constantinople St. Athanasius III, with whom she visited all the wanderings and journeys of the lord and in 1653 first arrived in Russia.

After the death of the saint in 1654, the icon was taken to the Athos Monastery of Vatopedi, where it remained until October 1849, when the Russian St. Andrew's Skete was opened. When the opening of this skete followed on October 11, 1849, Hieroschemamonk Bessarion blessed the brethren with the icon with the words: “May this icon be your joy and comfort in your sorrows and sorrows.” This image was decorated with a rich silver and gilt riza with a diamond crown on the head of the Mother of God.

In 1863, Hieromonk Paisius arrived in Slobodskaya from Athos to collect donations for the establishment of the Andreevsky Skete and brought with him this icon, which was placed in the Nativity of Christ Convent.

The first miracle from the icon was recorded on November 19, 1863 in the convent in honor of the Nativity of Christ in the town of Slobodskoy, where the abbess was the nun Pulcheria, daughter of Fr. Filaret (Philip Filimonovich Sazonov), one of the first inhabitants of the Andreevsky Skete, - Vladimir Nevolin, an 18-year-old student of the Vyatka Theological School, found the gift of speech.

“Father Volodya, a former priest with. Kyrmyzh, and then the hieromonk of the Assumption Trifonov Monastery Neon, took him to various doctors, but to no avail - the disease did not go away. Vladimir was sent to study painting at the Sloboda merchant A.A. Pashkin, who kept an icon-painting workshop. Almost six years have passed ... During the prayer before the icon of the Mother of God "Consolation in Sorrows and Sorrows," Vladimir fervently prayed to the Most Holy Lady. And when he pressed his lips to the icon after the prayer, he felt a heat that began from the tongue and spread throughout the body. After Vladimir returned home and again began to paint. But spiritual joy did not leave him. Looking thoughtfully at his master's brother, he suddenly said: "What a wonderful diamond crown the Mother of God has." And then he exclaimed with surprise, horror and delight: " Why am I talking?” The owner’s shocked brother could only say: “Pray, pray, Volodenka ...”

Immediately hurried to Fr. Paisios, who was about to take away the shrine. Of course, the departure had to be cancelled. A thanksgiving service was served. The news of the miracle quickly spread throughout the city, and a real pilgrimage to the icon began. Healings poured, as they say, like a river. The abbess of the Nativity of Christ Monastery herself, who suffered from rheumatism, received healing from the holy image of the Mother of God. On November 22, Paraskeva Ovchinnikova, the tongue-tied daughter of the deacon of the Sretensky Church in Slobodsky, spoke, on November 24, the peasant Nikolai Vorozhtsov was healed of paralysis of the legs, a 7-year-old girl Ksenia Kaysina from a leg disease and a 3-year-old boy Pyotr Likhachev from seizures, on November 25 - from the possession of A. G. Shuktomova, December 5 from bone inflammation 4-year-old boy Vasily Kibardin. In the 2 months after the 1st miracle, many such testimonies were recorded.

This wave of miracles turned the souls of the townspeople. The whole structure of life changed: secular entertainments were forgotten, people came to the temple every day or received the shrine at home. The sisters of the monastery literally spent the night in the temple.

After some time, the icon had to be sent to Vyatka, and at the farewell prayer service, the exact list from the miraculous icon was already consecrated. With great faith and gratitude for the healing, the healed Vladimir Nevolin worked on it, who painted the image in just a few days.

And in Vyatka, in turn, there was a real impulse of reverence. The icon was in the female Transfiguration Monastery. The doors of the temple did not close even for a minute. The icon was worn in city churches. During this time, many healings have been recorded. But Father Paisios had to go to Athos… The Icon was taken away. For a long time in the hearts of the townspeople there was an exciting feeling of visiting the Mother of God.

An impressive event was the construction of a temple in the name of the icon "Consolation in Sorrows and Sorrows" in the Vyatka Transfiguration Convent. During the stay of the image in Vyatka, the abbess of the monastery made a vow - to build a temple in honor of the miraculous icon - and fulfilled it with honor.

Temple in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Consolation in Sorrows and Sorrows", Vyatka.

Lists of miraculous icons can be found in many churches of the Vyatka diocese. In 1999, the throne of one of the temples of the former men's Holy Cross Monastery in the town of Slobodskoy was consecrated in honor of the icon "Consolation in Sorrows and Sorrows."

On November 19 (according to the old style), 1866, in the Sloboda Monastery of the Nativity of Christ, a gilded riza sent from Athos was solemnly placed on the list of the miraculous image of the Mother of God "Consolation in Sorrows and Sorrows", and in remembrance of the first healing from the icon (a dumb youth who completed the list ), a particularly solemn service was performed in the monastery. On this day, a celebration was established in honor of the miraculous image of the Most Holy Theotokos (December 2, according to a new style).

By decision of the brethren of the Andreevsky Skete of Athos, the revered icon was brought to Russia forever. In the monastery on Mount Athos, an exact copy from this icon was left.

On March 27, 1890, the shrine was brought to Russia and placed in St. Petersburg in the Annunciation Cathedral at the courtyard of the Andreevsky Skete. An exact copy of it was left in the monastery itself. Citizens of the city, day and night, hurried in crowds to bow to the miraculous image. The grace of God then deigned to glorify the icon of the Mother of God with numerous miracles.

Now the image is in St. Petersburg St. Nicholas Cathedral (in the altar), and the venerated list from the holy icon is in the Slobodsky Nativity Convent. In 1999, the throne of one of the temples of the former male Holy Cross Monastery in the town of Slobodskoy was consecrated in honor of the miraculous icon.

The Aleksiyevo-Akatov convent in Voronezh also keeps a list from the Athos shrine, which says: “This icon was painted and consecrated on Mount Athos in the Russian Monastery of St. In 1999, the icon began to stream myrrh.

Goes back to XVII century. There is a legend that the icon belonged to the Patriarch of Constantinople St. Athanasius III, with whom she visited all the wanderings and journeys of the lord and in 1653 first arrived in Russia. After the death of the saint in 1654, it passed to the elder, who lived in retirement in the Vatopedi monastery.
On the day of the opening of St. Andrew's Skete (October 22, 1849), Metropolitan Gregory, who lived in retirement in Vatopeda, presented the icon to the first abbot of the skete, Vissarion (Tolmachev), as a blessing from the monastery and due to the fact that this image had previously been a cell icon of Patriarch Athanasius III Patellarius, on the spot the cells of which Andreevsky Skete arose
In August 1853, the icon was sent by sea to Odessa, and from there by post to St. Petersburg by a priest. Feodorit (Krestovnikov), who collected funds for the monastery in Russia. In November, he received the icon with significant damage and, probably in July 1859, having returned to Athos, he returned it to the monastery. Before his death in 1862, hegumen Vissarion (Tolmachev) handed over the icon to the brethren with prophetic words: “May it be your joy and comfort in your sorrows and sorrows.”
In August 1863, during the icon's second sojourn in Russia for the period of collection by the priest. Paisii funds for the arrangement of the Andreevsky Skete, in the Kazan province, the icon showed miraculous power in healing people.

Vladimir told his sister, the priest's wife, about the vision. On the same day he became numb. Six years later, when Vladimir venerated the icon after the prayer service, he felt “a heat in his tongue that spread throughout his body.” Returning home, suddenly spoke. His first words were: “What a wonderful diamond crown on the Mother of God!”

To whom shall I cry, Lady? To whom shall I resort in my sorrow, if not to Thee, Queen of Heaven? Who will receive my weeping and my sighing, if not You, Immaculate One, Hope of Christians and Refuge for us sinners? Who else will protect you in misfortune? Hear my groaning and incline Your ear to me, the Lady of the Mother of my God, and do not despise me, demanding Your help, and do not reject me, a sinner. Reason and teach me, Queen of Heaven; do not depart from me, Thy servant, Lady, for my murmuring, but wake me Mother and Intercessor. I entrust myself to Your merciful protection: bring me, a sinner, to a quiet and serene life, and cry for my sins. To whom shall I resort guilty, if not to Thee, the hope and refuge of sinners, with hope for Thy inexpressible mercy and Thy bounty we enshrine? O Lady, Queen of Heaven!
