“Song. Psalm "- indicates a musical-vocal performance "sons of Korea", "Teachings of Haman Ezrahit" points to the writer Eman, a Levite from the surname Korah, a contemporary of David and the head of the choir. He is called the Hezrachite because long time lived among the descendants of Zara from the tribe of Judah. - "Teaching" - this work represents a reflection on the events experienced. "Na Mahalaf" - the word, for the loss of its original meaning, was left without translation. It is assumed that some kind of folk song began with this word, and therefore the inscription indicates the nature of the tune - following the model of a song that begins with this word.

This psalm is the saddest, bleakest in the Psalter in terms of the degree of sorrow and heavy feeling that the writer depicts here. It is difficult to specify the time and occasion of its writing. Since the writer was Eman, a contemporary of David, devoted to him and sharing his life's misadventures with him, one can think that he was written about some kind of severe calamity experienced by David, perhaps persecution from Absalom, which is confirmed by the content of the psalm, where David is depicted as abandoned by his friends, they were abhorred, he is in distress, from which he sees no way out; all this is in accordance with the position of David at the time of the rebellion of Absalom. The psalm is full of complaints about the hopelessness of the writer's situation, the proximity of death from enemies and the consciousness of his complete defenselessness.

Hear my prayer, Lord, as I am covered with sorrows and disasters that threatened me with death (1-7). You pour out your anger on me: you removed my friends from me; tired of waiting for your help (8-10). If I die, can I praise You in Sheol? (11–13). I constantly cry to You, because Your calamities have crushed me, I am abandoned even by my closest friends (14-19).

. Lord God of my salvation! By day I cry and by night before You:

"By day I cry and by night before you"- constantly, vigilantly, the writer cried out to God for help in view of his difficult and hopeless situation.

. for my soul has been filled with calamities, and my life has drawn near to hell.

“For my soul has been filled with adversity, and my life has drawn near to hell” I am full of suffering, both spiritual and physical. By "spiritual" suffering, one can understand either David's internal torment for his crime with Bathsheba, which was the cause his troubles family life in the face of the rebellious Absalom, or, more likely (since the writer was Eman, who was not involved in this sin), in general, a spiritual, oppressed state from the disasters he experienced. Under the "corporal" - the external, physical calamities of David, primarily his illness.

. I am equal to those descending into the grave; I became like a man without strength,

. thrown among the dead, like the slain, lying in the tomb, whom You no longer remember and who are rejected by Your hand.

"I equaled those descending into the grave"- I, apparently, have to share the fate with those who are close to death, sheol. I am helpless "thrown between the dead"- hopelessly abandoned, sentenced to death. I am abandoned by you "like the dead lying in the tomb" whom You have left and do not visit with Your mercy. Staying and living in Sheol, according to this view, is a stay outside the mercy of God, He does not protect those who are there and leaves them outside of His care.

. You put me in the pit of hell, in darkness, in the abyss.

. Your wrath has weighed down on me, and with all Your waves You have struck [me].

. You removed my acquaintances from me, made me disgusting for them; I'm locked up and can't get out.

. My eye is weary of grief: all day long I have cried to Thee, O Lord; I have stretched out my hands to Thee.

You, Lord, condemned me to death, pouring your wrath on me abundantly ( "fury... and... waves s”) in my many sufferings; I became lonely, abandoned even by friends ( "deleted... acquaintances"). They consider intercourse with me a defilement ( "made me disgusting to them"), which probably points to some kind of serious illness of David, considered by others to be contagious and vile, like leprosy.

This is probably the same disease that David spoke of in Psalm 37 (), why can the psalm be considered written at the same time, that is, during the outbreak of the uprising of Absalom. I am trapped in these disasters and see no way out of them. - "My eye is weary of grief"- the eyes were weakened from disasters, sufferings, or in the sense that the eyesight was physically dulled from David's tears about his situation, or figuratively - in the fact that his sufferings were so long that his eyesight was dulled from waiting, looking for help from God.

. Will You work miracles on the dead? Will the dead rise up and praise You?

. Or will Thy mercy be proclaimed in the tomb, and Thy truth in the place of corruption?

. Will they know Your wonders in darkness, and in the land of forgetfulness Your righteousness?

The writer's prayer for deliverance from disasters takes on a different character here. If a person died, then he disappeared irrevocably for earthly existence, went to that world where the Lord no longer works miracles. The dead cannot be healed by medical art so that he can live and glorify God in Sheol ( "in the darkness... in the land of oblivion"- that is, deprived of physical light and, as it were, forgotten by God) no one can know about the miracles performed by God and the deeds of His great justice. This means that the one who died untimely, not a natural death, as the writer of the psalm fears for himself, cannot fulfill the purpose of man's appointment on earth - to sing of the deeds of the Lord and reverently honor His name.

. But I cry to You, Lord, and early in the morning my prayer precedes You.

. Why, O Lord, do you cut off my soul, hide your face from me?

The consciousness that the Lord will not allow a person to die without allowing him to fulfill his purpose encourages the writer and gives him the strength to ask God for mercy again and ask God - why are you, Lord, "tear off my soul"- why do not you fulfill the desires of my soul, my prayer for Your help?

. I am unhappy and melting from my youth; I bear Thy terrors and I am exhausted.

"I am unhappy and melting from my youth" I have suffered since my youth. This can be understood in relation to David being persecuted by Saul when he was a youth. These disasters do not leave him even now, in the persecution he is experiencing from Absalom. With indications of the degree and depth of his disasters, the writer ends the psalm.

This psalm is the fourth in the Six Psalms. The darkness of the night resembles hell, sleep is death. The appointment of this psalm in the morning service, before the onset of the day, reminds a person of the need for efforts on his part to avoid rejection from God, which is possible only with the help of God and prayer to Him (5, 14), so as not to be subjected to eternal night, eternal death.

Big, overweight, clumsy, disheveled, thirty years old, in bubbling pants and a rag jacket, looking like a shy hippo, he stepped into the temple, catching his sleeve on the door. There was a smell of incense, melted wax, prayer. Ancient, beautiful and strict saints looked at Yegorka from the walls. They looked insinuatingly and sadly, with a secret hope, as if they wanted something very important from him, but they understood that in front of them was only Yegorka. With a timid, staggering step, with his mouth half open, Yegorka went out into the middle of the church and stood under the very dome, looking at the wondrous, high vaults. From the narrow, patterned windows, dense sunlight penetrated into the semi-darkness of the temple, smoothly fell on the dusty, gloomy frescoes, making them softer, kinder, fell on faces, played with the gilding of the iconostasis, carving sparks, giving the altar the grandeur of the night sky. The mother and the old woman watched the offspring in horror. Approaching almost close to the image, Yegor stopped, shook his head, stared at the beautiful and thin face of the Virgin, bared his teeth in an ugly smile with rare snags of yellow teeth.

Then he got up and wandered into the depths of the cemetery, looked at the tombstones and crosses without much interest, stopped next to the empty graves overgrown with dark weeds, carefully, stealthily went around in a circle, not taking his crazy eyes off them and suddenly broke loose, jumped up the grave mound, plunging along ankles to the ground, straightened up, spread his arms to the sides and stood like that for a long time, depicting a cross.

Yes, to drive him in the neck, this blasphemer, - some parishioners muttered, but they were afraid to approach the crazy giant.

Hush, infidels, be silent, - others hissed, - he is a holy fool!

If he were a holy fool, he would not trample graves and would have a god-like appearance, like our father’s, the first answered. - Look at the icon of blessed Simenon - in a cassock, in a beard, intelligent eyes, a tortured face - everything, like people! You can immediately see - a holy man, an old man. And this Yegor is yours - what? Not a man, but a devil with horns!

But where is it seen that the holy fool in a cassock walked? Or to behave like a normal person? That's why he is a holy fool, to pretend to be insane, showing us our sins and exposing our vices.
