Zaporozhye State engineering academy founded in 1959 by the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Education of the Ukrainian SSR as an evening faculty. Since 1965 - a branch of DMETI, and since 1976 - Zaporozhye Industrial Institute. Potebnya Yury Mikhailovich became the first rector. Under his leadership from a provincial university, ZII became one of the most famous and promising universities in the country. By the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 592 dated August 29, 1994, the Zaporozhye State Engineering Academy was established on the basis of the Zaporozhye Industrial Institute.

The academy has the opportunity to receive a second education both in parallel with the first one, and in the center of continuing education, as well as doctoral and postgraduate studies.
Technologies
To ensure the educational process, computer classes have been created at the academy, united by a high-speed network, equipped with multimedia computers high level which allow to develop modern systems of economic information, systems for modeling, forecasting and research of micro- and macroeconomic processes. For the organization, management, coordination, control and implementation of work to ensure the smooth functioning and development of the software and hardware complex on the rights structural unit ZGIA operates an Information and Computing Center.

As of 2014, the total student body of the academy was 5,397. Students take part in various events: gatherings, ceremonial meetings, business meetings, concerts, holidays. Achievements of students in sports is one of the successful areas that is being developed by the leadership of the academy. Pupils of the academy became Olympic champions, silver medalists. Eleven masters of sports in fencing were trained within the walls of the university. The academy provides an opportunity to practice basketball, athletics, volleyball; competitions are held in different types sports.

The Academy has 2 student dormitories for 1280 places, with a total area of 14850 sq.m. The dormitories have all the conditions for a comfortable stay of independent work and preparation for classes. A special contribution to the protection and strengthening of the health of students is made by the sanatorium-dispensary, the only one among the sanatoriums of Ukrainian universities, which has been awarded the highest category and operates continuously. Medical complex consists of doctors' offices, a manipulation room, an inhalation room, a physiotherapy room, and a physiotherapy department.
Cooperation and international relations
The Academy has a Department of International Relations. Since 1998, work has been intensified in the field of international cooperation, establishing and maintaining contacts with regional domestic and international funds and organizations that administer international academic and scientific exchange programs, as well as familiarizing students, graduate students and teachers with existing academic programs, grants, internships , providing comprehensive assistance regarding participation in them. ZGIA students, graduate students have the opportunity to take part in competitions for scholarships, internships abroad; students also have the opportunity during their studies for summer holidays work and travel around the countries of Western Europe, the USA. Since March 2006, the Academy's International Relations Department has been reorganized by merging the International Relations Department and the Preparatory Department for Foreign Citizens. The academy adheres to the principle: an engineer must be proficient in computer technology and be sure to know foreign language. Putting this principle into practice, ZGIA created a Linguistic Center where students can improve their knowledge of English, German or French, learn Italian and Spanish. Graduates who have been trained at the Linguistic Center are trained in the magistracy of educational institutions in Germany, Finland, Ireland. The Academy cooperates with the IAESTE National Committee, which organizes scientific and student exchanges and includes 54 universities of Ukraine, works under the auspices of the UN and unites national committees from 65 countries of the world.
