Egyptian phrasebook
The two most common Arabic phrases that you will hear around you every now and then during your stay in Egypt are:"In shcha alla!" - "If Allah wills!", and
"Il hamdul illa!" - "Thanks God!".
Using these phrases to the point and even inappropriately, you can "keep up a conversation" with the Egyptians for a long time, and in such a way that they will not immediately suspect that you absolutely do not know their language. Imagine that you will be asked questions in Arabic:
You are from Russia?
- Il hamdul illa!
- you will answer.
- Have you come to rest?
- In sha alla!
- Do you like Egypt?
- Il hamdul illa!
- etc. to infinity.
And here are the Arabic words that everyone should know polite to a foreigner in an Arab country:
Yes - ayua,
no - la,
thanks - shukran,
please - afuan,
Sorry! (to attract attention) - leusomacht!
maybe, maybe - mumkin.
For shopping you will need the following words and expressions:
How much does it cost? - Bikum huh?
Can I watch this? - Mumkin ashuf yes?
money - fulus,
surrender - fakka,
bad - mush quayes,
good - quies.
When moving the city may need the following words:
To the right - yaminak,
to the left - schimalek,
here, hyena
Where are you going? - Inta raih dryer?
city center - el dahar.
For orientation in time useful to learn:
Today - innaharda,
yesterday - imbarih,
tomorrow - bukra.
Word " bokra" is often used as a polite refusal. If you are promised that they will do something for you "tomorrow", this may mean that they will never do it ... Europeans jokingly call this phenomenon of Egyptian national psychology the abbreviation "IBM" - " In sha alla, Bokra, Mumkin", which means "If Allah wills, Tomorrow, Maybe!".
Can't do without numerals:
ten - Ashera,
twenty - esrin,
thirty - talyatin,
forty - arbain,
fifty - khamsin,
sixty - settin,
seventy - sabain,
eighty - tamanin,
ninety - tesain,
hundred - maya.
Other words you may need on your trip:
airport - matar,
plane - taera,
embassy - safara,
hospital - mustashfa,
hotel - hazelnut,
president - rais,
Egypt (self-name) - Misr,
hot - dry,
cold - barid,
a lot - kitir,
little - shuaia,
a little bit - shwaya-shwaya.
Greetings at the meeting: As-Salam Mualaikum (literally - peace to your home),
Answer: Waleikum As-Salaam wa Rahmat Mubarakiat.
Phrasebook for Egypt: |
Today I continue a series of short dictionaries - phrasebooks of the most used words and phrases. Your attention - Russian-Arabic (Egyptian dialect)) phrase book.
Does a tourist need a Russian-Arabic phrase book?
Do you not know the language of the country you are visiting? No problem, and nothing to be afraid of. No one will eat you for speaking only your own language. Do they all speak Arabic? But do all those who come to Russia bother to study the "Holy Trinity": "hello", "thank you" and "sorry"? Of course, I'm not saying it's right.
I also do not claim that minimal knowledge of a foreign language is absolutely unnecessary. But if this is the only reason that prevents you from immediately buying a plane ticket, then I have good news for you - this is not a prerequisite for a great vacation.
However, despite all of the above, think about the meaning Czech proverb:
..."When you learn a new language, you gain a new soul"...
There is a huge amount of truth in this statement. Each language, with its own structure, reflects the traits and behaviors characteristic of the people using it. When you learn a language, you inevitably look at the behavior of its speakers and after a while you begin to understand them more.
In addition to such lyrical and slightly elevated reasons, there is also a practical benefit from at least minimal knowledge of the language of the country in which you are traveling.
What are the practical advantages of knowing the “minimum set of knowledge” of a foreign language:
- You will not blink your eyes incomprehensibly when you hear an elementary greeting;
- If necessary, you will be able to convey to the local resident the meaning of your request or question, and such needs unfortunately happen;
- In any country in the world, foreigners who speak at least a dozen phrases in the local language have a warmer and more friendly attitude.
So we smoothly approached a short Russian-Arabic phrasebook. In fact, in Egypt, as in many other countries, many different languages are used. However, the majority of the population considers only Egyptian Arabic.
Below I have given the basic words and phrases that you may need to conduct a minimal dialogue in Egypt (Egyptian phrasebook).
Important : capital letters in the middle of words denote a stressed syllable; a colon before a letter denotes a pause before that sound.

Russian-Arabic (Tunisian dialect) phrasebook: how to explain yourself in an unfamiliar country. Popular phrases and expressions for travelers.
- Tours for May around the world
- Hot tours around the world
Modern colloquial Arabic is divided into 5 groups of dialects, which are actually separate languages from a linguistic point of view. The dialect spoken in Tunisia, along with Algerian, Libyan and Moroccan, belongs to the Maghreb (Western) group. Over the years of colonization, the Tunisian dialect has absorbed many words from French, Italian and Turkish.
