They are thrown from Olympus, thrown into the sea and into the bowels of the earth, terrible monsters are sent after them, but the children of the gods do not care. They fight and defend their right to life, despite the fact that the most powerful forces seek to defeat them.

An interesting fact: 10 out of 53 essays are "ours". The texts were written by Anna Krasova, historian (applicant degree Candidate of Historical Sciences), who completed postgraduate studies at the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Eight illustrations were drawn by Dominique Erard especially for MYTH readers at the request of the publisher.

12. "Museum of Living Insects"

This book is a museum. Not boring and dusty, in which all the exhibits are under glass, but one that sings of the triumph of life and calls to observe the exhibits in nature (and not stick butterflies on needles).

The curator of the museum, and part-time ardent lover of insects (in which we recognize the author), has collected a collection of the most interesting exhibits and is happy to introduce them to visitors (that is, readers), speaking of insects as good friends and, in general, the most wonderful creatures in the universe .

Each hall (turn) of this unusual museum is dedicated to some property of an insect. And this property is not always associated with a scientific characteristic. Classes and detachments of the keeper do not care. Therefore, he divides them depending on the unique feature, something like this: beauties, swimmers, poisonous, winged, masquerade heroes, warriors, musicians, round people.

In addition to insects (beetles, grasshoppers, butterflies, dragonflies, flies, wasps, bees), two more creatures from the microcosm “live” in the museum: centipede (common flycatcher) and spider (brownie), which often live in our homes.

Wonderful watercolor illustrations are presented in an unusual way: in addition to naturalistic images, you can find sketches on each page. varying degrees drawings depicting insects in a different period of development, in a different pose, or an interesting part of the body large. And how the wings of the butterfly from the cover shimmer in the sun!

This non-fiction children's book in every sense is simply huge - it has 400 information-filled pages! I have been looking at it for a long time, but for a long time I could not decide whether to buy it, whether it is worth the money. But now that the book is in my hands, I can confidently say: worth it!

The abstract states that the book is "one of the best known encyclopedias dedicated to devices and mechanisms. First published in the US in 1988, it has been a bestseller ever since. non-fiction books for teenagers».
This edition is definitely not for kids. This encyclopedia for middle and high school students as well as their parents.
The book consists of five parts:

  • Mechanics
  • Taming the elements
  • Working with radio waves
  • Electricity and automation
  • digital world
This is accompanied by small histories of the invention of machines and mechanisms, a glossary of terms and an alphabetical index.
Each part of the book is preceded by an illustrated story, the main character of which is a mammoth. He accompanies the reader throughout the book. What they don't do with it! And they launch it into the air, and lift it up with the help of a block, and shine it through with X-rays, and attach it to the ceiling on suction cups ... A charming beast that makes the book more fun and a little hooligan.
But the main thing, of course, is not in mammoths, but in feature articles encyclopedias.

Part 1. Mechanics
Did you know that scissors and tweezers use different types of leverage? And that there are two levers in nail clippers? Do you know how a floor scale, a bicycle brake, or a sewing machine work? How does an escalator, elevator or tower crane, chain winch or combine harvester work? Stapler or car brake system? You can learn about this and much more from the first part of the book.
Part 2. Taming the elements
In the second part, we will learn about everything that floats and flies, as well as those devices that use pressure or heat. These are submarines, yachts, balloons and airships, planes and helicopters. It tells about the principles of operation of the carburetor, drain tank, fountain pen, welding torch, electric kettle, nuclear weapons... And that's not all!
Part 3. Working with waves
This part discusses in detail the devices and devices with which we receive light, images, photographs, prints, sound, music, telecommunications. The child will learn how the human eye, electric light bulb, camera, printing press, microphone, speakers, headphones, telephone, TV camera and much more work.
Part 4. Electricity and automation
This part is divided into three chapters: electricity, magnetism and sensors.
The first chapter begins with an explanation of what static electricity and electric current are. The following are the principles of operation of the air purifier, ionizer, clock, batteries, photocells, remote control, etc.
The chapter "Magnetism" also begins with a theory, then the reader is explained where such an application finds its application. physical property like magnetism. Well, then there are specifics: an electric bell, an electric motor, a disk drive, a generator, a transformer, and even a car ignition system.
The last chapter is even more interesting! First we are told about the airbag and autopilot, then we learn how the breathalyzer, smoke detector, x-ray, sonar, radar, transmission, cruise control, coin checker work (and you know how the hot drink machine learns what coin did you flip?), etc.
Part 5: Digital World
I will not go into details, from the title it should be clear what this chapter is about: bits, bytes, information storage, processing, sending. And also about the device of computer mice, flash drives, keyboards, etc. etc.

What I have listed is not all that is in this children's encyclopedia for schoolchildren. It's amazing how much information is hidden under the cover of this illustrated, amazingly interesting and necessary encyclopedia. I am absolutely delighted! I want to sit in a comfortable chair, wrap myself in a warm blanket and read, read, read...
Of course, I would like the font to be a little larger, but this is probably impossible due to the large amount of information and the size of the drawings. And they (drawings) are large, clear, understandable. On each spread there are several illustrations that clearly demonstrate the principle of operation of a particular mechanism. Usually these drawings occupy at least half of the area of the book sheet.
However, there are also some minor downsides. Let me remind you that the book was written in 1988. Therefore, some articles have become outdated. It is unlikely that your child will meet in his life a film camera or a video recorder, and computers now are different from those that existed at the time of the first editions of the book. However, there are few such examples. And you can comprehend the principles of operation of technology on outdated samples.

I am sure that for all inquisitive children this book is just a godsend (and especially for boys). You can study it for a very long time, and the knowledge gained from the book will help the child in adulthood: after all, he will understand what works and how, which means he can, for example, repair something himself. And fastening a zipper, opening a can of canned food, using a thermos or a refrigerator, a microscope or binoculars, a computer mouse or electronic scales, a flash drive or a scanner, an ordinary watch or quartz, a microphone or a metal detector (and why not? They are used by modern treasure hunters!): he will understand HOW EVERYTHING IS WORKED and how it works.

A modern kid's library is unthinkable without encyclopedias in pictures about the world around them. I want to talk about three encyclopedias that I consider the best of the available assortment at the moment.

I also want to note that "baby" encyclopedias are now big variety. It is easy to get confused among the assortment. This publication will discuss books that can become the first sources of knowledge for a child of 1-2 years old. For those who already have the “First Book” and preschoolers 3 years old and older, it is better to choose something more informative (more on that in another review).

My first book | Difficulties in choosing an encyclopedia for a child under 3 years old

At the moment, store shelves are bursting with abundance, including books. The question is: "What is so difficult about choosing an encyclopedia?". They are sold in a wide variety! Everything is colorful and bright. Glossy, offset, coated paper… Hardcover, variety of formats… For every taste.

I know that many do not understand the problem of choosing encyclopedias. There are a dime a dozen of them, and I complain that there are few quality ones. I want to clarify my position by showing you a look at encyclopedias from the position of a child of 1-2 years old:

Imagine a kid who has never seen a living fox and wolf. Or I saw them 1-2 times in the zoo for 2-3 minutes. And that's it! In addition to the wolf and the fox that day, he saw a hundred more animals at the zoo. And he is not at all sure what the fox and the wolf look like ... Yes, and in general it was a few months ago ...

perhaps the image of animals in the memory of the child will be covered with fog

it is also quite possible that the features of the animals were mixed up and there was a mess in the memory

To structure knowledge, it is best to purchase an encyclopedia. But most encyclopedias in the minds of toddlers can add even more confusion due to their sloppy and sketchy drawings.

Examples of typical images of wolves and foxes in most children's encyclopedias

Examples of "correct" illustrations of wolves and foxes. On the left are illustrations from the encyclopedia "My First Book" of the White City. In the center of the illustration from the encyclopedia "The first book of the baby." On the right are illustrations from the encyclopedia "My First Book" ed. ROSMEN.

My first book | Review content

This review will cover the following books:

  • “My first book. Favorite" ed. White City ( Labyrinth, Ozone, My-shop);
  • "Baby's First Book-" ed. dragonfly ( Labyrinth, My-shop, Ozone);
  • "My First Book" ed. ROSMEN ( My-shop, Ozone).

All three books are analogues of each other, so there is no point in buying them all. Choose the one you like the most. I hope this review will help you with this :-).

Encyclopedias these books can be called a stretch. In these books you will not find information about objects and phenomena. In fact, these are collections of thematic illustrations for introducing children of 1-2 years old to the outside world. First of all, the “first” books are intended for children to study the world around them together with their parents. These books never get boring.

  • Immediately after the acquisition, you will have to comment on hundreds of illustrations. When studying such books, the child gradually awakens a cognitive interest and he will certainly want to learn about each illustration in the book.
  • When working through the material of the book, it is important to compare real objects and drawings on the pages. After a few examples, the child will learn to do it himself and will be delighted with his new skill. For a child of 1-2 years old, this skill is very important.
  • As the last stage of studying books, I always conduct an unobtrusive control of knowledge - riddles. For a child of 1-2 years old, you can open the previously studied spread and ask to find an object according to its description appearance. For example,
    • Find the blue item worn on the head (hat).
    • Show the dishes from which they drink tea, water and other drinks (glass).
    • Show which of the animals to be afraid of (bear, wolf, etc.).

"My First Book" is my favorite book. White City

“My first book. The most beloved" of the White City publishing house ( Labyrinth, Ozone, My-shop) has been the most popular encyclopedia for the little ones for many years.

This encyclopedia has been in the lead for many years. Judging by recent reviews, the book is not losing popularity. I think it's one of the best-selling books for toddlers.

As I wrote above, the book contains many illustrations for thematic conversations with parents.

Yana is already 5 years old and about 5 years ago, among the first books in our children's library, I bought this particular encyclopedia. Already at 10 months old, Yana began to recognize the depicted animals and correlate them with toy copies.

This book has been a top seller for many years, and for good reason. The book has advantages that are often not found in analogues:

  • Realistically drawn images of objects and objects of the surrounding world.
  • Retro style. To be honest, I don’t know where to attribute the style of illustrations to advantages or disadvantages. I think that the generation brought up on the values of the USSR will perceive the retro style as an advantage, and someone can express their “fi”. In general, this is a matter of taste. The main thing is that the images have style. They are almost all detailed.
  • The illustrations in this book are larger than in any other book. The giraffe takes up a whole page! Such illustrations will be comfortable to consider even for a child under one year old.
  • White background. For the perception of illustrations by children under 2.5-3 years old, a white background is very important.

Not without cons:

A couple of twists:

"Baby's First Book" ed. Dragonfly

About "Baby's First Book" Labyrinth, My-shop, Ozone) I found out a little later. Differences between this encyclopedia and the bestsellered. White City:

  • Has a modern color rendition. So juicy and bright that it seems close to a cartoon.
  • Illustrations are large, on a white background.
  • The manner of execution of the illustration is less realistic than in the book ed. White City. But the images are of high quality and easily recognizable.
  • Thinner paper.
  • This book is less than a third. It has 96 pages. Encyclopedia of the White City (in yellow cover) contains 144 pages.
  • This copy is cheaper than its counterparts.

"My First Book" ed. ROSMEN

"My first book" publishing house ROSMEN ( My-shop, Ozone) filled with photographs as illustrations. This book is for those who strive for maximum realism.

Of the main disadvantages for children of the first and second years, I would single out the size of the illustrations. About a dozen objects are placed on each spread. Children begin to perceive such an abundance of images from a year and a half.

Benefits of the book:

  • Realistic images. The book is filled with high quality photographs. If you notice any flaws in the spread photos, know that the quality of the photos in the book itself is impeccable;
  • thick non-translucent paper;
  • voluminous - 144 pages.

My first book| Advantages of encyclopedias of this review

  • The main advantage of the books in this review is realistic large images. Frankly, for children aged 3 years and older, the realism of the images is no longer so important. At this age, children perceive well, including sketchy and cartoon illustrations. But still, high-quality pictures, in addition to the cognitive function, also instill an artistic taste. Another thing is that it is quite costly for publishing houses to supply all encyclopedias with realistic high-quality illustrations. Sloppy illustrations are cheaper because they are done faster and with less labor, so you often have to choose a book with either beautiful pictures, or with quality texts. When choosing a book for a child of 1-2 years old, the choice is definitely for illustrations, because you can compose a text for little ones yourself on the go.
  • Generous content at a relatively low price. All three books of the review cover a wide variety of topics and can be a comprehensive encyclopedia for a child under 3 years old. Lately There are many cardboard books available for sale. Cardboard is a durable material and is preferred for making books for toddlers, but it adds a lot of cost. Those. a cardboard encyclopedia for the same price will contain only 10 pages and, of course, such a book cannot be an exhaustive source of information.

All three books presented in the review are great options for developing activities with the baby.

I want to note that in addition to encyclopedias with a set of illustrations, there are other demonstration materials for getting to know the outside world:

  • From my experience, picture cards are best for getting to know the world around them from the age of 10 months. Posts about cards and games with them. The best cards for children under two years old are super cards from Clever (review).

By the way, in addition to encyclopedias in pictures for this age, there are still a lot of excellent books that develop not only horizons, but also thinking, motor skills and artistic and aesthetic perception. Collections with reviews of other books for the little ones can be found.

I hope my posts will help you choose a really interesting and age-appropriate book. Enjoy reading!

If it was interesting, do not forget to subscribe to or join groups on social networks

I recently bought two new books for my child: the “Very First Encyclopedia” series, ROSMEN publishing house.

Listen, they're so cool!!! We are 4 years old. And it's just what the doctor ordered! Most importantly, they are inexpensive. I took for 135 rubles. There are a whole bunch of them, about everything in the world.

Vanyusha is just very interested in topics about Space and Dinosaurs, that's why I took them! The child so absorbed these books that we only discuss them day and night, quote, retell and read-read-read

Okay baby... I'm addicted to them myself. The illustrations are juicy, large, clear, understandable. Especially in the book "Cosmos". The planets are drawn so cool and each planet is briefly described. The information is concise. In moderation. No more, no less, exactly as much as is needed at 3.5-4-5 years old, as much as a child at that age can digest and assimilate.

The paper is coated, the format is convenient, the book is light.

I “felt” a lot of encyclopedias for kids on the topic of Dinosaurs))). Lots of things right now. Eyes run wide. But there are no complaints at all. She made me feel completely satisfied. this moment. I also watched AST about dinosaurs - “My first discoveries” ... no, compared to this one, there is some completely lengthy information, about nothing somehow ... for the very first time it will do, BUT ... then, what, buy another one ? Meanwhile, this Avanta stands like a cast-iron bridge. For such a price, there are too few pages, the chip is only pictures-pockets. But this is 2.5-3 years, and then where is it, so expensive? .. Again - compared to this series. So she is very colorful.

The other one too ... seems to be colorful, bright. Good quality. But the info is so detailed that the kid will simply lose interest quickly, and he doesn’t need it. However, I liked her, if much older. Or if the child is a fan of dinosaurs and wants to study them in detail.

Everything is great here. Of course, to each his own. As for other topics, for example, “The Human Body” ... I didn’t like it, because we have a better mountain)))
) I recommend!

In general, with such books for children from 3 to 5 years old, there is some kind of crisis. There are publications either for very young children - in them the encyclopedia consists in a set of large pictures that are collected in thematic blocks, or encyclopedias for younger students - with a bunch of text, slurred illustrations - some kind of melancholy. And our inquisitive dragons right now, at 3-4 years old, are ready to absorb the most interesting facts, kick them out of the saddle with their non-standard “why?”, demand something new, interesting. I started looking for children's first encyclopedias about a year ago. And here are the results - 5 copies from our library.

No. 1. On the title photo - Electronic encyclopedia for little ones. Ladybug Lessons. Moscow edition-2012. Interactive encyclopedia for joint reading of an adult with a child: we ask a question by inserting a ladybug's antennae into the hole next to the question, and the kid looks for a picture with the correct answer and inserts the second ladybug's antennae.

Spread from "Lessons of the Ladybug" - "What is prepared from what?"

If the answer is found correct, a sound is heard, the ladybug will blink, and if not, the insect will be silent. Knowledgeable and tireless. Many different topics and good pictures. The very idea of searching is motivating. The material is combined: on one spread there is both what the baby already knows and what is really interesting to learn about at his age. We especially liked the pages about Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.

We got this wonderful encyclopedia as a gift from our Olya Zhukova, for which many thanks to her!

Opening from "Lessons of the Ladybug" - Ancient Egypt

No. 2. Your first encyclopedia. Wonderful planet. Makhaon Publishing House, Moscow, 2010. I did not even immediately understand what the catch was. It turned out to be a translation of the French edition. The approach is interesting: large hand-drawn illustrations, little text, but brief interesting facts. This book makes it easy to talk about natural phenomena preparing the child for the journey. Our guys from senior group I liked it very much - plunged into the story with my head. Although much had to be supplemented, explained at an accessible level. The encyclopedia is only a tool to interest, illustrate, delve into the topic.

Your first encyclopedia. Wonderful planet.

Spread "Wonderful Planet" - from the theme "Desert"

№3 Encyclopedia for children. The human body. Moscow, Makhaon, 2008. Also translated from the Italian edition. We just finished in kindergarten the topic “I am the one and only” is about our body, feelings ... This book is addressed to children of primary school age. But we also used something for ourselves. For example, when getting acquainted with the feelings of a person. There was no need to explain about the smell and smell for a long time. The authors of the encyclopedia proposed to conduct an experiment - to guess certain products by smell with closed eyes. The son guessed almost everything correctly (he called yogurt kefir), he made dad smell and guess, it was interesting and fun. Great book for younger students!

Thematic encyclopedia "Human Body"

A child has more than 10,000 taste buds on the tongue, while an adult has only 5,000. Therefore, our tastes can change with age. Interesting facts from the section "Five senses: taste".

Spread of the encyclopedia "Human Body"

#4 My First Book of Learning. London, 2009. Precisely the first encyclopedia - for the little ones. The time for facts has not yet come, but there are many drawings and stories. About seasons, about space, about plants. A book with voluminous moving pictures, with an element of transformation: it was - rotated - turned ... All this causes a wild desire to touch, pull, see how they work, these live pictures. A gift from our Luda Troilina from London.

My first textbook

Spread of the English edition - How plants grow

#5 Specialized Children's Encyclopedia See Me Grow - Watch Me Grow by Scholastic, 2012. Excellent edition! An example of an ideal children's encyclopedia for children aged 3-4 years. The book contains enough accurate and understandable information, bright large professional photographs. Considering that the theme of the encyclopedia is the development of insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, and the biological aspects of this process do not always look attractive to children, I can say that the team of authors did their best: everything is very decent, reliable and absolutely not disgusting - all these embryos, fry and other embryos. See for yourself! I would buy a whole series of such thematic encyclopedias. Each book has its own code, which you can enter on the project website and get access to the online encyclopedia - with additional materials.

Encyclopedia "How I Grow" Scholastic

Rabbit Spread - How I Grow Up Scholastic Encyclopedia

Conclusions: good children's encyclopedias for ages 3 to 5 are negligible. If there is, it is almost all foreign publications. It is better to buy thematic/specialized encyclopedias with good illustrations/photos, interesting facts. A high-quality children's encyclopedia can captivate a child for a long time.
