Internet banking - what is it? Theoretical foundations of electronic banking For its customers, the service of Internet banking.

As we have already shown in the previous article

The main direction of development of banks in recent years is the introduction and development of remote banking systems (RBS).

Remote banking customer service in Russian banks is based on electronic banking technologies (e-Banking) used throughout the world.

As electronic banking technologies, as a rule, are used:

    telephone and mobile communications,

    communication via networks (local or Internet),

    technical devices (ATMs and terminals).

Depending on the chosen technology of electronic banking, it is customary to distinguish the following forms of remote banking services:

    PS banking(PC Banking) - involves the installation of special software on the client's computer to communicate with the bank;

    Internet banking(Internet banking) - involves using an Internet browser to access banking operations;

    telebanking or telephone banking (phone-banking) for account management - the capabilities of telephones with tone dialing and fax functions are used;

    mobile banking (mobile-banking) - the exchange of information between the client and the bank is carried out using either a mobile phone via SMS messages or via the mobile Internet (SMS-banking, WAP-banking, GSM-banking);

    banking services through ATMs(ATM-banking) and self-service terminals.

In the previous article, we dealt with the form of remote banking service in the form of a mobile bank (banking), and the topic of this article will be internet banking or internet banking.

Currently, there is no well-established terminology in the field of remote banking services, and therefore one should not be surprised that such concepts as Internet banking, Internet banking, online banking, online banking, internet-banking, E-banking, etc. mean almost the same thing. same.
In this material, two terms will be used - Internet banking and Internet banking, which, in my opinion, do not fundamentally differ from each other.

The history of the development of Internet banking (Internet banking)

The concept of Internet banking, or E-banking, as a remote banking technology (RBS) that allows bank depositors to:

    access information about your accounts and

    carry out operations on them using the Internet,

emerged in the 1980s in the USA.

And the further chronology of events is as follows.

USA 80s: It was then that the first banking system Home Banking was created in America, which made it possible for bank customers - individuals to check their bank accounts by connecting to the bank's server through a regular phone.

USA 1994: The first operations to transfer funds from bank accounts via the Internet were carried out in 1994 by the Stanford Federal Credit Union.

USA 1995: And already in 1995, the first virtual bank was created - Security First Network Bank. However, it did not last long and failed due to economic reasons.

The first bank to achieve success in online banking was Bank of America, which successfully developed Internet banking, making it the most popular means of paying bills and loans in the United States.

Currently, in Western Europe and the United States, about 90% of adult Internet users use the services of Internet banking (Internet banking).

Russia 1998: In Russia, remote banking payments via the Internet first appeared in the late 90s. The pioneer in this area was Avtobank, which in 1998 was the first in Russia to launch the "client-bank" system - online bank account management.

However, in subsequent years, this service developed rather slowly in Russia, in proportion to the development of the Internet itself among the population of our country.

And only in the last decade, Internet banking in Russia began to be actively introduced into banking:

    which, on the one hand, is due to the growing spread of high-speed Internet, and

    on the other hand, with the development and improvement of the banking sector as a whole.

A more active introduction of such modern banking technologies as Internet banking (Internet banking) is hindered to a large extent by a psychological problem:

    general financial illiteracy of the population;

    many of our citizens still do not understand the specifics of the activities of banks, do not understand the products offered by banks.

Features of Internet banking (Internet banking) in Russia

Currently, the banking sector, both foreign and Russian, is a fairly highly competitive market, and in order to survive, banks must constantly improve and keep up with the times.

One way banks survive:

    on the one hand, the introduction of financial and information innovations that reduce the costs of banks, and

    on the other hand, an increase in the client base of banks.

So Internet banking technologies allow us to solve both of these problems. Information technologies are currently developing rapidly, both abroad and in our country, which is reflected in the development of Internet banking in the banking sector.

The use of Internet banking allows you to:

    significantly save customers time, as well as

    optimize the work of bank offices.

The use of the latest banking technologies by Russian banks affects not only the development of the domestic banking sector, but also the positioning of the Russian banking system in the international arena.

The main advantage of the Internet banking system is the ability to:

    remote access to your bank account for any requests - from obtaining detailed information on the state of your account to transactions for repaying loans, transferring funds between accounts or paying for goods and services;

    pay utility bills, mobile operators and Internet service providers,

    remotely open a deposit account or remotely process applications for loans.

The most popular operation currently performed by Internet banking users in Russia is viewing account statements and transaction history. Three quarters of Internet banking users make at least one payment transaction via Internet banking per month. At the same time, the most popular categories of payments are mobile communications, the Internet, transfers between one's accounts within the bank and utility bills.

In more detail, the structure of operations performed in the Internet bank in our country is currently presented in the following table.

Rating of Russian Internet banks

Currently in Russia:

    86% of banks offer Internet banking services and

    54% offer mobile banking services.

The number of Internet banks in the Russian banking market has practically not grown for the second year, and the main changes occur in the qualitative plane:

    the design of Internet banking interfaces is being updated and

    connection of new functions.

According to experts, the most popular way to remotely manage your money is Internet banking:

    already about 25 million Russian Internet users aged 18 to 64 living in cities with a population of over 100,000 people use Internet banking;

    almost half of users use Internet banking opportunities in two or more Russian banks (41%);

    the city with the highest penetration of Internet banking is Moscow. Here, 63% of Internet users have access to at least one Internet bank;

    Sberbank Online is the most popular Internet bank in Russia with a significant lead over its competitors. It is used by 3 out of 4 internet banking users;

    Sberbank Online also has the largest share of exclusive audience - 46% of its users do not use other Internet banks;

    in aggregate, the audience of Internet banks of Alfa-Bank, VTB24, Russian Standard and TCS Bank is 38% of all Russian users of Internet banking;

    Together with Sberbank Online, the five most popular Internet banks cover almost 90% of Internet banking users.

The most popular Internet banks by the share of Internet banking users

Internet banking service is a technology for servicing bank customers online. With it, the user can access his account via the Internet from his computer.

Internet banking

Today, most Russian banks announce the so-called Internet banking in the list of their services. Yes, but the content of this product is almost always different. And most often under a big name lies an ordinary sms - notification. This is, without a doubt, a very convenient information service. By subscribing to it, the client, using short messages on the phone, receives information about the status of the account: about the balance of funds, about recent transactions, warnings about the expiration of the plastic card, reminding about the terms of payment on loans. Thus, the system is arranged for those who applied for a loan at Renaissance Bank online.

If in a store or restaurant where the card is in the wrong hands, for example, a person is accidentally charged more money than he owes, then an immediately received SMS will warn him about this. Very useful and the ability to instantly block the card using a mobile phone in case of loss or unauthorized use - anything can happen. Sometimes it is important to set a spending limit on your credit cards or cards of relatives in time. This helps to keep the family budget. But, in fact, this is almost everything that such an sms service can do. Well, except that it periodically sends you “useful” advertisements from your bank to your phone.

For a bank, organizing such mobile banking is simple and cheap. It is enough for a credit institution to acquire a corporate sim card and a special modem. A subscriber who subscribes to sms-banking pays for his outgoing requests to the telecom operator and incoming requests to the bank. Plus savings on employees of all kinds of call - centers, which are no longer disturbed by such trifling issues as the amount of account balances. But no matter how modern such a service may seem, it has a very indirect relation to Internet banking, or rather, it is only a small part of it, as in the OTP bank. In any case, it does not allow you to really manage a bank account: make transfers, take loans, buy shares. It does not give the client complete freedom of remote financial transactions.

For example, many banks post a special loan application form on their websites that can be filled out electronically. Moreover, they can even consider it without your participation and report the answer. But you still have to apply for a loan at the office. Next is the loan payment. Instead of transferring the required amount from their account to the lender directly on the banking website, borrowers are often faced with a “half-hearted” solution: they do not need to go to the bank, but can pay through the nearest terminal. The question is, why then does the bank have Internet banking?

A full-fledged Internet-banking service is much more technological, labor-intensive and, in fact, risky for the bank. Therefore, in reality, it is offered by force in ten to fifteen Russian banks. These are such monsters as Sberbank, VTB, Northern Treasury, MDM-Bank, Raiffeisenbank, NOMOS-Bank and some others.

The bankers themselves are full of optimism about the prospects for the development of remote banking. The main trend in the banking services market today is the transition from "paper" to computer technology. A person no longer wants to go to the bank for every piece of paper, stand in lines there, apply for loans for several weeks. For example, a common situation: making a deposit at a bank branch takes at least half an hour from the client. And that's not counting the road.

How to connect the Internet banking service of Sberbank

And then it will have to be extended. And the interest on the deposit as a result will barely cover inflation. Is it worth the time and effort? On the other hand, if you transfer even a not too large, but still absolutely free amount to a deposit directly from home, then even the smallest dividends will turn out to be net profit. A penny, as you know, saves the ruble. So the future of credit institutions, without a doubt, lies in the large-scale development of Internet banking.

Banks such as UBRD have long taken care of the development of this service in their company. Considerable investments of banks in the creation of infrastructure and software for the implementation of such a service, as world practice shows, pay off quite quickly. Therefore, it is not a financial issue that stops Russian bankers, but problems with ensuring the security of their clients' accounts. Numerous stories about brilliant hackers, scandals with the theft of passwords for credit cards and databases of banks themselves widespread on the black market cannot but cause concern among customers. And if we take into account the fact that the Russian client is surprisingly careless and trusting, and even tries to write down his own pin-codes on his own card, then the indecision of the bankers is quite logical. No benefits will overshadow the desire to save money.

Nevertheless, credit institutions are fighting very persistently over the issue of security. More and more new "defense lines" are being created - identification passwords, electronic signatures, reliable "medicines" for computer viruses are appearing. In addition, a special virtual card is used to pay for purchases via the Internet, which is created in the Internet banking program. Its validity period is from one to 90 days, then it is simply destroyed. Interestingly, while our banks are struggling to improve the security of banking, their Western counterparts prefer to rely on the services of insurance companies or simply include the risks of possible losses in the cost of services.

Back to Banking system

One of the main directions of the NBU today is the formation of a national system of mass electronic payments by the population for goods and services (SMEP).

The National System of Mass Electronic Payments is a system of non-cash payments, in which payments for goods and services are made using bank payment cards.

Payment card - a document on electronic information carriers in the form of a plastic card issued by credit and financial institutions. The document enables its bearer to receive goods and services without payment in cash, including services for receiving cash through banking institutions, and confirms to persons who provide these goods and services that payment for their cost will be made from accounts in banking institutions.

The mechanism for carrying out transactions with bank payment cards is regulated by a certain legislative and regulatory framework. The main documents regulating the procedure for using bank payment cards in the domestic economy are: “Regulation on the procedure for carrying out accounting operations with bank payment cards of the national system” (approved by the NBU Board Resolution No. 353), “Regulation on the system for protecting electronic information in the system of mass electronic payments population for goods and services in Ukraine "(approved by the Resolution of the NBU Board No. 353).

To carry out transactions with payment cards National system it is necessary to obtain a license (permit) from the NBU.

The members of the system are:

— Holders (owners) of cards - individuals;

— Enterprises of trade and consumer services of the population, in which payment terminals are installed;
— Credit and financial institutions (issuing bank, acquiring bank, settlement bank).

Payment terminal - an electronic device that is used to authorize a payment card and the main operations for processing payment for the cost of goods and services provided.

What is online banking

Issuing bank - an institution of a bank that issues payment cards into circulation.

An acquiring bank is a commercial bank that signs an agreement with merchants for servicing cards, performs primary processing of transactions and undertakes to carry out the entire range of card transactions with merchants, namely: transferring funds for goods and services to current accounts, sorting and distribution of receipts, distribution of stop-lists.

Transaction - information in electronic form about a separate operation carried out using a payment card (loading and reloading a card, receiving cash, paying for goods and services, etc.).

Loading (additional loading) of the card - entering information on the payment card about the availability of funds. Settlement bank - a banking institution where another bank participating in the payment system (usually an issuing bank) opens a special account for making payments using payment cards.

The issuing bank issues a card to the client after a thorough check of his financial condition and creditworthiness assessment; opens a special account for the cardholder, on which all transactions with the card are recorded; regularly sends the client an extract indicating the amounts of payments and the amount of debt, amounts and repayment periods; charges commission and interest in accordance with the established tariff; undertakes to pay the bills of the merchant for purchases made using cards, minus the payment fee (discount).

Types of bank plastic cards: "Electronic wallet", "Electronic check", debit card.

Internet banking - what is it?

The Internet banking service is one of the tools for selling a banking product and its distribution is directly related to the search for more and more competitive advantages in the field of customer service.

Internet banking growth trend in Russian Federation is about 20-30% per year. In 2003, about 150 Russian banks (which is about 12% of the total number of banks) provided full-fledged Internet services to at least one of their customer groups. In subsequent years, this trend continued and already in 2005, 350 banks (approximately 30% of the total) offered Internet banking to their customers. It can be summarized that the growth of this service for 2003-2005. amounted to about 130%.

According to analysts' expert data, at the moment, almost all banks use the Bank-Client (classic banking) when working with legal entities. 60% of Russian banks use Internet banking solutions and only 20% use telephone banking solutions. On average, 15-20% of banks use the remote banking system for individuals.

There is a steady growth in the retail segment in the banking industry, which, of course, gives an even stronger impetus to the development and spread of Internet banking. It is the availability of various additional services in the field of remote customer service that is one of the most important strategic courses of banking. It is assumed that these services will occupy certain market shares of the banking sector.

"Business Vision" conducted a study, according to which 30 large banks of the Russian Federation do not have Internet banking service for corporate clients, 65% of banks do not have this service for individuals. There is a further development of Internet banking and its improvement.

Basically, banks offer legal entities only one Internet service, except for the banks of Petrocommerce, Rosbank, UralSib, and Industrial Construction Bank. The considered Internet banking systems for legal entities provide quick access to the necessary background information, provides the ability to send messages to the bank, the ability to receive statements and information about the status of accounts. Only about 90% of systems allow various operations with a corporate account.

Along with Internet banking, there is a rapid development of other remote banking services: sms-banking and WAP, telephone banking.

Conclusion

In modern conditions of high market dynamism and competition for their customers, banks are trying to come up with more and more new ways to attract additional financial flows. To this end, various means of improving customer service are used. One of which is the introduction of Internet banking services. An experience recent years for a number of banks showed that the introduction of this system allows not only to improve the quality of service for existing bank customers, but also to increase the number of new ones, which, in turn, ensures the growth of profits and profitability of the bank. Thus, Internet banking is a service whose growth prospects in the coming years are very bright and significant.

Natalia Grinchenko

The banking business must be stable, reliable and attractive to customers, and therefore, to a large extent conservative. But advanced technologies are gaining a worthy place among the traditional tools of banking. Of these, electronic banking services, or E-banking (Internet banking), can be distinguished. It allows for electronic access of customers to banking services, i.e. having a bank account, an electronic key and a computer with Web access at hand, the client receives wide range banking services.

It was the creation of the World Wide Web, or WWW (WorldWideWeb) in the 1990s that gave impetus to the development of commercial Internet technologies, or the global commercialization of the Internet - Internet banking, Internet trading, Internet insurance, electronic payments in the B2B segment ...

Despite the fact that Internet technologies appeared in Russia later than in the EU and the USA, already in 2001, according to the American publication Computer Industry Almanac, the Russian Federation was among the top 15 countries in the world in terms of the number of Internet users. The Ministry of Communications of Russia predicts an increase to 26 million users by 2010, but now about 5 million Russian citizens are regular visitors to the network. Currently, about 10% of active Internet users are customers of online stores, the growth in the turnover of online commerce contributes to the development of a system of electronic payment for goods, works, services, including systems for the provision of electronic banking services.

Today, the management of bank accounts using the Internet is the most dynamically developing segment of the electronic banking business. Various Internet banking systems can serve as the basis for conducting work on the securities market and remote insurance, since they effectively provide settlements and control over the procedure for passing payments.

According to the investment bank JP Morgan, the level of Internet banking penetration increased during 2000-2003. from 8 to 22% in the European Union and from 15 to 33% in the USA. Despite these impressive figures, there is still considerable room for expansion: in Germany, the share of online accounts is about 12%, in the US and the UK - 6%, in Sweden - 31%.

According to the World Bank, in the last two decades of the 20th century, computer power increased 10,000 times, while telecommunications costs fell just as dramatically. The relative overhead costs in Internet banking are 2-3 times lower than in conventional banks, and the processing of Web transactions is 5-10 times cheaper than using traditional channels. Thus, the cost of conducting one financial transaction in the office is $1.07, by mail - $0.73, by phone - $0.35, through an ATM - $0.27, through the Global Network - $0.10.

The expansion of the number of Internet users has allowed Russian banks to offer electronic banking services to their customers. The most common of them are: Internet-Client, Internet-Bank, Bank++, Client-Bank. These systems provide the client with a full-fledged banking service in real time, offering secure access from anywhere in the world via the Internet to the reference and financial information of the bank, working with payment documents, sending these documents via the Internet to the bank, receiving bank statements on the client's accounts for a certain period of time. The main task when using e-banking is to maintain the secrecy of the transmitted information. This is ensured by the use of standard secure communication protocols (SSL, TLS, etc.), cryptographic algorithms for additional data encryption, and an electronic digital signature mechanism.

Currently, several models of online banking business have been formed in Russia:

Internet division of a traditional (offline) bank, supplementing the network of branches and call centers;

An Internet bank established by an offline bank as an independent legal entity with its own trademark (in Germany such banks are called direct banks);
- Virtual bank (an analogue of the Internet bank, organized by a non-banking company - most often an insurance or technology company);
- An aggregator of an electronic financial supermarket (a bank that carries out Web sales of both its own and those offered by others financial institutions services).

The first two models are the most common. The Internet division is usually used for transactions in the domestic financial market, and the Internet bank is used for going abroad, since it provides the flexibility necessary for foreign activities in the use of financial instruments, setting tariffs and selecting customers.

All types of banking activities carried out using the Internet can be divided into basic and additional.

The main types include:

Opening and maintenance of bank accounts;
- carrying out non-cash settlements on behalf of individuals and legal entities for their settlements;
- purchase and sale of foreign currency in non-cash form.

For additional:

Attraction of non-cash funds of individuals and legal entities in deposits;
- placement of attracted funds on its own behalf and at its own expense;
- provision of information and consulting services.

Internet banking can be carried out through a computer with Web access, as well as through a mobile phone.

With the help of Internet banking systems offered by various banks, you can buy and sell non-cash currency, pay utility bills, pay bills of mobile operators, conduct non-cash intra- and interbank settlements, transfer funds to your accounts and track all banking transactions on your accounts for any period of time.

The use of Internet banking systems provides users with a number of advantages:

Saving time by eliminating the need to visit the bank in person;
- the ability to control your own accounts 24 hours a day and, in accordance with the changed situation in the financial markets, instantly respond to these changes by closing bank deposits, buying or selling foreign currency, etc.
- control over operations with the use of plastic cards.

Any write-off of funds from the card account is promptly reflected in the account statements prepared by the systems.

The ability to work with special card accounts allows you to use the services of online stores both in Russia and abroad at a fairly safe level - you just need to transfer the required amount of funds to the card using the Internet banking system, and then use this card to pay for any service or product on the site. At the same time, account statements will be available, from which you can determine how much money was debited from the card, for what, etc.

The growing popularity of e-banking in the Russian Federation once again confirms the existence of a stable and solvent demand for this new type of banking services.

The high interest in e-banking is primarily due to more attractive conditions compared to those offered in traditional banks. Since the costs of organizing banking services via the Internet were considered disproportionately small, most online banks foreign countries initially offered their future clients very high deposit rates.

Russian banks have chosen a fundamentally different way of increasing their client base - a gradual reduction in tariffs for basic banking operations. To date, Russian credit organizations are not inferior to banking organizations of foreign countries in the development and speed of implementation of the most modern financial technologies. According to the results of monitoring the market of financial Internet services, conducted by the Russian company "Internet Marketing", the most widespread are the developments of the companies "Bank" with Soft Systems, BIFIT, INIST.

Internet banking carried out using a mobile phone is divided into WAP banking and SMS banking.

WAP-banking is a remote management of the user's bank accounts, carried out using a mobile phone equipped with special software. Today, banks do not single out WAP-banking as a separate type of service. Therefore, a client who wants to conduct banking transactions only by mobile phone will have to connect to the e-banking system.

At the same time, it should be noted that Russian mobile communication companies, offering their customers GSM mobile phones with the ability to access the Internet, cannot always maintain the necessary degree of protection of transmitted or received information at the same level as it is organized on the Internet. Consequently, banks cannot take responsibility for the confidentiality of customer payments and, for now, offer them to view the balance of funds on the account and the list of funds using a mobile phone. recent transactions. Currently, to ensure the security of payments in WAP-banking systems, a number of banks resort to coding settlements - they negotiate a list of transactions with the client and assign an appropriate code to each of them. When carrying out any of the operations, the user only needs to enter a code that, upon confirmation by the bank, activates the necessary transaction. In this case, the commission for transactions on the account by the bank is not charged.

Another financial service provided by banks to owners mobile phones, is SMS banking. With the help of SMS-messages, the client has access to all information about the status of current accounts, as well as receiving account statements for the required period. According to experts, this service has much more prospects than WAP-banking. Firstly, because of the cheapness, and secondly, due to the higher data transfer rate.

It's no secret that you can live on the Internet for months, and if you don't go to extremes, then it's enough to take advantage of the "web", whether it's finding a job, shopping in an online store, getting help information or just chatting. In any case, it is not bad to have material support in the form of electronic cash.
