Do I need a primer on the walls before puttying and which solution to choose?

The primer is the basis of any internal construction work. After such processing of the walls, all subsequent layers will reliably adhere to the surface, and their aesthetic appearance will not deteriorate over time. The primer for walls under putty, depending on the composition, type and purpose, is able to penetrate deeply into the thickness of the treated surface, strengthening the layers and improving the absorbency of the base.

If you want to make repairs, and your walls are fragile, loose or crooked, then they will have to be strengthened and leveled. This can be done with the help of special formulations. Initially, puttying is performed, and then a primer, which must be selected in accordance with the type of substrate.

Often, many people who started repairs do not perform priming. In some cases, a primer is not needed if, for example, you have an even, solid and reliable base in front of you. However, if the surface requires additional strengthening, improving adhesion, then a primer is necessary for walls under wallpaper, tiles, paint and other coatings.

It is also indispensable when you have a crumbling, loose or moisture-prone base in front of you. In such cases, priming is a mandatory element of surface finishing. Otherwise, paint, wallpaper or tile will not last long. The walls will begin to crack and crumble.

If a high level of humidity is found in the room, then stains will appear on the coating, and mold and fungus will develop under them. To avoid such troubles, it is extremely necessary to choose the composition according to the base (under wood, metal, concrete, brick).

The primer improves adhesion of materials and protects the surface from excess moisture. If the plane is pre-primed, then the putty will last much longer and will not crack or crumble over time.

You can, of course, save money and do without preliminary preparation. But such a repair will look worse and last several times less.

What to prime?

There is a large selection of mixtures on the building materials market. However, not every primer before puttying the walls is suitable for interior decoration, as some compounds are quite toxic. Often a polystyrene and acrylic mixture is used.

Tools needed for this kind of work: a respirator, a bucket, a sponge, a fine-nap roller, a roller tray.

Soil mixtures for walls consist of various components and are produced on a different basis. Thus, the following types are distinguished: alkyd, acrylic, quartz, phenolic, mineral and others. Let's describe each of them in more detail.

  • Acrylic compounds are well suited for brick, concrete, wood, cement and glass substrates. There are also water-based acrylic formulations. They are used for walls under emulsion water-soluble paints and enamels. The advantage of this mixture is the high drying speed (2 - 3 hours) and the absence of odors.
  • Alkyd compounds. They have excellent anti-corrosion properties. Particularly suitable for wood, but also for steel, glass, tiles, fiberglass. These mixtures are categorically not suitable for drywall and plastered surfaces. Dry on average 12 - 16 hours.
  • Mineral compositions. Used for brick, concrete, plastered, gas silicate surfaces. On each package, as a rule, the types of bases for which they are suitable are marked. On average, the coating dries in a period of two hours.
  • The compositions are quartz. Ideal for improving adhesion because they create a slightly rough surface on the plane. And this is an ideal basis for adhesion to the finishing material (decorative plaster, paint).

When choosing a primer, you need to consider the conditions (temperature and humidity) under which it will be used.

Mortar application technique

The primer is sold ready-to-use. Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare the base. Initially, weak areas of the surface are removed so that they do not fall off later along with the plaster. Then the wall must be cleaned of dirt and greasy oil stains, if any. And only after that proceed to the application of the primer.

If you do the work yourself, then remember that the surface must be dry. It doesn't need to be wetted. One of the advantages of priming is that it requires a minimum of special skills and tools.

The first step towards a quality finish is a primer. It is used for the primary processing of the plane in order to securely fasten the subsequent coating.

Priming the walls before puttying allows you to protect the surface from excess moisture, decay, and close micropores. It also guarantees perfect application of plasters or trouble-free wallpapering.

Application technique:

  • We clean the walls from dust, dirt. After that, wipe the surface with a damp sponge.
  • Pour the mixture into a roller stand and apply it to the wall surface.
  • We apply the composition in a thin layer. It is important to ensure that a thick layer is not applied to the wall. Accumulation of solution and streaks are not allowed.
  • We process hard-to-reach places with a small brush.
  • After finishing the primer, leave the surface to dry. The drying time of the primer is usually indicated on the packaging and is 4 - 24 hours.
  • After complete drying, we putty the surface.

Soil application is a prerequisite for a quality repair. In a good way, you need to prime the walls after applying each new layer of finishing work. This will increase adhesion and durability of the coating. It is all the more important to apply primer before puttying, which finally levels the walls and is the final stage of wall finishing before decorating.

A wall primer ensures that the attractiveness of the facade and your decor will be preserved. This surface pretreatment is always the right choice for quality, beauty and cost optimization.
